Strategic Communications Unit Chief


Background: Our Knowledge, Innovation and Communication (KIC) Sector is currently looking for a strategic, people leader and highly motivated communications professional to head the Strategic Communications Unit, reporting directly to the Sector Manager.

KIC helps the IDB Group to:


  • identify, build, apply, and disseminate high-quality knowledge as well as to develop and use learning products that enable the building of technical and general competencies.
  • promote an internal culture of innovation by providing experience, networks, and methodologies and expediting the adoption of creative solutions; and
  • expand the audience that uses the Bank’s products and position the brand through internal and external communication.


The team: The Unit´s main responsibility is to support the communications of the Office of the President, contribute to develop the Bank’s corporate communications priorities, coordinate, and provide guidelines for internal communications and community relations, and develop cross-cutting messages to help position the IDB Group and strengthen its reputation. The unit maintains close coordination with the Communications Division to ensure proper alignment and coordination of all communication efforts with our country offices, operational sectors, functions, IDBLab and IDBInvest.


The Unit:


  • Provides communications advice and direct support to the Office of the President, including preparation of speeches, presentations, interview briefs, opinion columns and social media content. Also coordinates talking points with relevant Vice Presidencies and offices, disseminates IDB talking points on key issues, and oversees media engagements for IDBG senior management.
  • Supervises the development of messages and the editorial strategies to guide the Office of President content in IDB Group’s corporate communications channels.
  • Evaluates requests for the President´s participation in internal and external events, issues recommendations, and prepares communications materials accordingly.
  • Coordinates crisis communication with the Office of the President and other departments, as necessary.
  • Manages the internal communications between the Office of the President and the IDB Group and prepares guidelines that govern internal corporate communications.
  • Manages communications related to the Annual Meeting and produces the Annual Report.
    Manages the IDB’s
  • Community Relations Program and internal staff volunteerism efforts. 



What you will do:



  • Lead the Unit’s employees (comprised of highly skilled interdisciplinary and multicultural staff, located in Washington D.C.), define goals and expectations, and offer feedback and technical mentorship to optimize performance.
  • Provide advice to the Office of the President and the Executive Vice President, in addition to the Vice Presidents, IDB Invest and IDB Lab on its communications strategy, lead the development of communications plans, execute these plans in coordination with the Communications Division and other relevant Bank departments.
  • Advise Management on strategies, initiatives, policies, and guidelines related to executive communications.
  • Handle unique internal/external projects that surface, including work with external partners and organizations to coordinate engagements.
  • Oversee the editorial production and quality control of speeches, opinion columns, video scripts, along with related press interviews content for Office of the President.
  • Develop and manage social media strategy (content and presence) for the Office of the President.
  • Act as a technical point of contact (press officer) for the IDB Group for cross-cutting corporate and institutional matters that may affect our reputation. Work in coordination with Communications Division press officers.
  • Work with the Communications Division Chief to craft strategies and guidelines, ensuring alignment and coordination to internal and external communicational efforts.
  • Align Unit plans with the broader goals and strategies of the Bank as well as the planning of the resources to deliver results against business plans. Assume responsibility for the delivery of high-quality products and/or services on schedule and budget. Develops annual business plans to achieve identified business objectives and makes recommendations on resource and budgetary requirements.
  • Promote continuous improvement and efficiencies in business and, people process, as well as the judicious use of financial and budgetary resources of the Institution.
  • Ensure that workplace practices and behaviors follow our policies related to ethics and respect in the workplace.



What you will need:

Citizenship: You are a citizen of one of our 48-member countries. We may offer assistance with relocation and visa applications for you and your eligible dependents.

Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.

Education: You hold a master’s degree (or equivalent five years’ “Licenciatura”) in Communications, Public Relations, Business Administration, or related field .



  • At least 10 years of relevant experience related to the key responsibilities of the position.
  • Experience in Executive Communications and working with senior leaders.
  • Strong internal communications, crisis communications and event planning experience.
  • Experience in LAC countries is strongly preferred. Knowledge of Washington DC, regional and international media preferred.
  • Strong technical background and validated management track record, able to lead teams and collaborate across other functions. Experience handling multi-disciplinary and/or cross-sector teams, with demonstrated coordination and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly shift priorities to mitigate day-to-day issues, while still delivering and meeting strict deadlines and budgets.
  • Outstanding social and communication skills with the ability to consult, partner and work effectively with senior leaders and business partners across countries, sectors, and group members.
  • Works well under pressure, is flexible, resilient, and able to thrive in a dynamic, rapid-paced environment.
  • Experience working with international organizations is an advantage

  • Strong project management skills, including but not limited to leadership, communication, planning and people skills, risk and cost management, negotiation, critical thinking, and quality management.
  • Ability to influence through meaningful insights and recommendations.
  • Understanding of our mission, organizational strategy, and business model.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and frameworks in a manner that is suitable to the involved parties and in the best interest of the IDB is a plus.
  • Delivering results by effectively leading people and the efficient allocation of resources.
  • Setting performance standards and provides feedback, guidance, and coaching to drive growth and continuous improvement.
  • Promoting diversity and inclusion, modeling inclusive behaviors, and bringing to bear diversity to achieve business results.
  • Pro-active, self-starter with ability to organize, prioritize and execute multiple projects across multiple partners simultaneously in a high-pressure environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to use data for decision making.

Languages: Excellent English and Spanish language proficiency, oral and written, is required. Fluency in French and/or Portuguese would be a plus.
