Office of the Secretary, Interpretation Section, Simultaneous Interpreter Consultant

Background: The Interpretation Section (SEC/INP) is seeking to expand its roster of experienced professional conference interpreters and is offering interested candidates the opportunity to apply to a 1-month consultancy at its headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The team: SEC/INP is the IDB Group’s official interpretation service. It provides simultaneous interpretation for meetings of the governing bodies of the IDB Group, namely its Boards of Governors, the Boards of Executive Directors of the Inter-American Development Bank and the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC), and the Donors Committee of the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF).  It also provides such services to Senior Management Committees. In addition, the Section contracts and coordinates freelance interpretation services for IDB Group seminars and events at headquarters and in member countries.

The IDB Group has four official languages: English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese.

What you’ll do: Provide simultaneous interpretation services as part of a team with staff and freelance interpreters.

  • Interpret deliberations in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese into Spanish and/or English, communicating accurately and effectively, using appropriate terminology and register.
  • Prepare for meetings to ensure a thorough understanding of concepts, issues, and terminology.
  • Master IDB Group terminology.
  • Perform other duties as required.
What you’ll need:
  • Citizenship: You are a citizen of one of our 48-member countries. We may offer assistance with relocation and visa applications for you and your eligible dependents.
  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB Group.
  • Education: Master’s degree or equivalent in interpretation, international relations, economics, or related field and/or postgraduate certification in simultaneous interpretation.
  • Experience: A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience as a conference interpreter, including work with international organizations. Familiarity with the LAC region. Solid understanding of development finance, economics, and other subjects related to the IDBG’s areas of work.
  • Languages:  Native fluency in English and/or Spanish as A-language(s), with a strong passive command of French and/or Portuguese as C-languages.
Opportunity Summary:
  • Type of contract: Consultant
  • Length of contract: 1 month (February or May 2019)
  • Location: Washington, D.C.
  • Requirements: You must be a citizen of one of the IDB’s 48 member countries and have no family members currently working at the IDB Group.   Given the purpose of this consultancy, interpreters currently on the IDB freelance roster need not apply.

Interested candidates should complete an application and include a letter of interest, a CV, and 3 professional references. Selected candidates may be required to take a simultaneous interpretation test.
