Background: We are searching for a highly qualified and excellent people manager to serve in the position of Division Chief of the Infrastructure and Energy Division.

The role: You will support a broad range of critical business sectors including energy, transportation, water and sanitation and social infrastructure. One of our focuses is on sustainable infrastructure and energy and this role will be instrumental in developing a strong pipeline of transactions in this space.

You will report directly to the Chief of Investment Operations (“CIO”) and guide a dedicated team of approximately 35 full-time employees in delivering IDB Invest’s mandate for development throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

At an operational level, you will lead a team of Investment Officers (“IOs”) who are experts in originating and executing sustainable projects with significant developmental impact.

This Division will maintain, as deemed necessary, the responsibilities for customer relationships and product expert’s engagement in areas such as debt capital markets, equity and quasi-equity instruments, as well as resource mobilization and technical cooperation. The ultimate objective will be to offer innovative solutions to clients, attract third party funds and enhance the financial and non-financial additionality of transactions. Furthermore, you will work closely with other organizational divisions/teams of IDB Invest and IDB, as needed, to achieve coherence within the IDBG’s overall portfolio of infrastructure and energy region-wide.


What you’ll do:


  • Designing and executing the Division’s business and action plans.
  • Leading a dedicated team of Investment Officers. Managing interdisciplinary and multi-cultural professionals located both at Headquarters in Washington, DC as well as throughout Latin America and the Caribbean through the IDBG’s network of regional field offices.
  • Overseeing project development from the prospecting stage through origination, structuring, negotiation, approval and closing ensuring that the investment teams are properly staffed and motivated;
  • Managing high-level client relationships with key industry players and partners including both the public and private sectors.
  • Participating in conferences and seminars and other events appropriate to maintaining and building sector knowledge and promoting IDB Invest infrastructure and energy related capabilities;
  • Maintaining constant diplomacy with the support functions within the IDBG (business development, environmental, social and corporate governance safeguards, development effectiveness, legal, risk, and integrity functions, among others) as part of the overall construction of strong development bank transactions;
  • Providing support for the development of IDBG Country Strategies and the IDB Invest’s multi-year Business Plans in relation to infrastructure and energy development;
  • Promoting innovation and encouraging staff to adopt changes being introduced in the marketplace and keeping abreast of opportunities for new products and services.
  • Providing mentoring and designing personal development for your team; and overseeing human resources (staffing) and budget allocation decisions for the Division.


What you’ll need:

Education: An advanced degree (at least Masters, MBA, or equivalent) in economics, development studies, finance, business administration, engineering, or another relevant field.

Experience: At least 10 years of relevant experience, with 7 years at the senior leadership level. Candidates must possess a clear understanding of private sector operations (including those of multilateral and/or development finance institutions) and have a strong background in international Project Finance and Structured Finance practices and standards. Knowledge and experience in Latin America and the Caribbean is also considered Essential.

Language Skills: Oral and written professional proficiency in English and Spanish required; knowledge of Portuguese and/ or French is preferable.
