IDB Invest – Investment Management Officer / Lead Officer – Financial Institutions Division – Central America and Mexico (2 positions)

Background: We are looking for an Investment Officer/Lead Officer professional (2 positions) for the Financial Institutions Division (FLI) of the Investment Operations Department (INO) of IDB Invest in Central America and Mexico.

INO is responsible for clients and partners’ engagement for the origination, structuring, closing and supervision of transactions and projects that meet our requirements. INO follows a matrix model with three Segment Divisions covering Infrastructure and Energy (Transport, Energy, Water and Sanitation and Social Infrastructure), Financial Institutions (Banks, Funds, and other Financial Institutions), and Corporates (Agribusiness, Tourism, Manufacturing and Telecommunications, Media and Technology), as well as transversal areas such as Financial Products and Services, and Portfolio Management. INO also houses two Teams (Marketing and Business Communications and Business Strategy, Planning and Resources), and is responsible for advisory engagements with clients, in close coordination with IDB Invest´s Strategy and Development Department (DSP). 

Our team: Our division supports Financial Institutions (FIs) through debt and equity financing, guarantees, and knowledge to promote economic development, job creation and the adoption of sustainable corporate governance principles.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead the identification, selection, origination and execution of financial institutions’ transactions in Central America and Mexico.
  • Lead the evaluation of both lending and non-lending projects, including, but not limited to, the initial screening of project applications, evaluation of feasibility studies, and preparation of concept notes, assessing project risks and advising on mitigation actions.
  • Conduct appraisal meetings to collect the necessary technical, legal, economic and financial information and assess potential investment opportunities.
  • Manage with trade finance and capital markets product specialists, as well as those in other areas (environmental, social and governance safeguards, finance, development effectiveness, legal, and risk) project structuring and closing of deals.
  • Lead industry and market research to guide the business efforts, aligned with the investment strategy of IDB Invest.
  • Maintain knowledge of the financial markets and FI transactions. Manage preparation of lessons learned from projects.
  • Disseminate information to project teams on transaction strengths, weaknesses, risks, and mitigation options.
  • Play a meaningful role in promoting IDB Invest by developing key relationships in the private sector development communities, liaising with industry authorities, potential clients and partners. Generate new business opportunities.

Education: You hold an advanced degree (Master’s, MBA, or equivalent) in Finance, Business Administration, International Development, or any other relevant field.


  • You have at least 5 years of proven experience in investment origination, structuring or portfolio management with a shown track-record in FIs.
  • Your experience working with both debt and equity participations would be highly desirable.
  • Your understanding client needs and challenges, market idiosyncrasies, and drivers of change in Central America and Mexico is highly valued.
  • Strong financial modeling/valuation and analytical skills are a plus.

Language: You are proficient (oral and written) in both English and Spanish.
