Consultant to Support the Optimal Sanitation Initiative


The Water and Sanitation Division (INE/ WSA) is looking for a professional to contribute to support the implementation of the Optimal Sanitation Initiative.


The team:

Established in 1959, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is today the main source of multilateral financing for economic, social and institutional development in Latin America and the Caribbean. It provides loans, grants, guarantees, policy advice and technical assistance, and produces and disseminates knowledge products, to the public and private sectors of its borrowing member countries.


The Water and Sanitation Division (INE/WSA) within the Bank is committed to expanding access to quality services for low-income and vulnerable populations, promoting comprehensive and sustainable solutions, improving sector governance and financial sustainability, and incorporating the concept of water security in the sector, particularly by increasing wastewater treatment coverage, protecting supply watersheds and reducing flooding risk.


In light of these commitments the Water and Sanitation Division is dedicated to knowledge production, management and dissemination that serves to assess needs and priorities, the Bank developed the Optimal Sanitation Initiative, which aims to support the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean in complying with the Sustainable Development Agenda, specifically on Sanitation. The Initiative is structured in four main areas: i) People; ii) Governance; iii) Watersheds; vi) Technology and Innovation. Under these four areas, the Bank will develop during the next five years and ambitious action plan to support the countries in the region through the development of tools, guidelines, studies, capacity building activities and projects which can contribute to the sanitation agenda.

What you’ll do:

  • Support in the implementation of Optimal Sanitation Initiative.
  • Give advice to the country office specialists and governmental counterparts on the principles of the Optimal Sanitation Initiative and the available products.
  • Prepare terms of reference for products identified in the Initiative.
  • Support in the preparation of requests of financing to donors and funds.
  • Develop knowledge products on related topics.

What you’ll need:

  • Citizenship: You are a citizen of one of our 48-member countries. We may offer assistance with relocation and visa applications for you and your eligible dependents.
  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB Group.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental sciences or administration. with a master’s degree in water and sanitation related topics.
  • Experience: At least 5-year experience in the water and sanitation sector and at least one-year experience working with an international organization.
  • Languages: Fluent in Spanish and English.

Core and Technical Competencies:

  • Written and oral fluency in both English and Spanish.
  • Work in team.
  • Results oriented.

Opportunity Summary: 

Type of contract: Full-time consultant.

Length of contract: one year with possibility for extension.

Starting date: January 2020.

Location: Washington D.C.

Responsible person: Water and Sanitation Senior Specialist.

Requirements: You must be a citizen of one of the IDB’s 48 member countries and have no family members currently working at the IDB Group.
