Chief of Education

As Chief of the Education Division (EDU), you will support the Bank’s strategy and operations in the area. You will lead a group of dedicated professionals to generate and translate innovative analytical work and standard methodologies into relevant lending operations and knowledge and capacity building products. You will develop strategies to mainstream education issues into IDB operations for social development (labor markets, social protection programs, gender and diversity, inclusion and health), as well as other sectors within the Bank.

The team: Our Social Sector (SCL) is a multidisciplinary team that invests in people as the way to improve lives and overcome the development challenges in the countries we serve. Jointly with them, we formulate public policy solutions to reduce poverty and improve the delivery of education, work, social protection, and health services. Our objective is to advance a more productive region, with equal opportunities for men and women, and greater inclusion of the most vulnerable groups.

The Education Division has a key strategic mandate.  The recovery and improvement of education opportunities post Covid-19 is one the key areas for the Bank Group’s agenda in the next five years and beyond.  This priority intersects with other central topics on the Group’s agenda such as employment creation, digital transformation, integration regional, climate change and gender equity.  

What you will do:

  • Own the design, preparation and execution of high quality and relevant loans and technical assistance operations, knowledge products, policy dialogues and institutional capacity building activities, incorporating cross cutting themes such us gender, diversity, climate change, digital transformation, among others.
  • Advise Management on the development of strategies, policies and guidelines for the Bank, with special focus on adapting to the specific educational needs of the different borrowing member countries. Special attention needs to be given to the linkage between education and employment creation. 
  • Identify and integrate innovative ways, with emphasis on the use of digital technologies and a high awareness on data analytics for learning and teaching. These approaches can include those with potential to craft systemic disruption to those targeted to specific sector challenges, creating both external partnerships and alliances within the IDB Group.
  • Own the generation, sharing, dissemination, and application of analytical sector work on education in coordination with other Bank sectors.
  • Lead, motivate and develop a multi-disciplinary group of professionals located in Washington DC and our country offices in the region. Manage using a top set of soft skills and promote teamwork.    
  • Develop strategic and innovative partnership with relevant institutions, including governments, international organizations, regional agencies, the academic community, and civil society.
  • Manage all aspects (human resources, budget deployment and implementation of operational plan) for a multi-disciplinary group of professionals.


What you will need:


Education:  You hold a Master’s or equivalent Licenciatura/advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred).  in Education, Social Sciences, Political Sciences, Public Policy. and Administration, or other relevant fields.

Experience: You have at least 10 years relevant to the duties and accountabilities of the position. In addition:

  • You are recognized as a leader and authority among peers in the field.
  • You have a shown experience in similar positions, preferably in Latin America or the Caribbean, including broad experience, at a similar level, in coordinating multidisciplinary teams to develop complex projects in a matrix structure environment, with strong technical background.
  • You combine strong intellectual leadership with: a) a track record of successfully designing or/and implementing projects and programs in the areas described above, and b) broad experience in working with knowledge networks and knowledge dissemination and management.

Publications: Significant publication record on education, gender, diversity and social inclusion issues, preferably on Latin American and Caribbean countries.


Languages: You have excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Spanish is required.  Oral and written proficiency in an additional official Bank language (French or Portuguese) is a plus.
